Situated 34 km northwest from Faro, is believed to have been founded by Phoenicians and later occupied by the Romans. At the begining of the VIII Century, the town was under Arabic domination, and was named Al-buhar (castle of the sea). In 1249, was conquered by Dom Afonso III and given to the Order of Avis. Situada 34 Km a Noroeste de Faro, julga-se ter sido fundada pelos Fenícios e, mais tarde, ocupada pelos Romanos. No princípio do Séc. VIII a cidade estava sob o domínio dos Árabes e era chamada Al-buhar (castelo do mar). Em 1249 foi conquistada por D. Afonso III e doada à Ordem de Avis.
